As it marks the annual halfway point before Christmas, July 25 is sometimes celebrated as “Christmas in July” — the unusual celebration dates back to a North Carolina girls summer camp in which counselors in the 1930s put up Christmas garlands and organized a gift exchange to surprise campers.
Going forward 90 years, it is still most often celebrated primarily in summer camp (or occasionally office environments) while companies will often see it as a marketing opportunity. This year, Frontier Airlines (ULCC) is holding a “Christmas in July” sale in which it slashed plane tickets for certain routes down to $19 for loyalty members and $29 for everyone else.

“Fly from just $29 with our Christmas in July sale,” the Denver-based budget airline wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. On the website page created for the sale, one can scroll through the different fares that are included in the promotion — the lowest $29 routes include flights from Atlanta to New York City, Baltimore to Detroit, Charleston to Philadelphia, Cleveland to Dallas, and Los Angeles to Phoenix (there are dozens of other routes.)

More expensive but still discounted routes include flights from Las Vegas to Chicago for $69, Orlando to Portland for $59, and Portland to Phoenix for $39 as well as international routes such as Atlanta to Mexico’s Cancun for $89, Philadelphia to Jamaica’s Montego Bay for $109 and Tampa to the Dominican Republic’s Santo Domingo for $109.

Each fare also comes with a slightly lower “Discount Den” rate. Frontier’s annual membership costs $59.99 a year along with an $40 enrollment fee and gives one discount fears throughout that year.
The “Christmas in July” sale will run until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, July 25 and can be used to book travel until Nov. 13, 2024. Similarly to other fare-slasher fares that Frontier regularly holds, the fares one sees in the promotion are also subject to a number of conditions and limitations.

The lowest fares will usually appear only for flights during the least busy days in the middle of the week while there are also blackout periods for certain dates — Aug. 29, Sep. 2 to 3, Oct. 11 to 14, and Nov. 11 to 12, 2024.
The base fare also does not include any taxes, airport fees, or baggage costs that the traveler will need to cover. One will also not be able to use the sale to buy a ticket for a flight leaving in less than seven days
“Travel to the state of Florida, Sunday through Wednesday; travel from state of Florida, Tuesday through Friday,” Frontier clarifies on its website. “Travel from the U.S to international destinations, Sunday through Wednesday; travel from international to U.S destinations, Tuesday through Friday. Directionality between markets applies in both directions.”
The airline frequently holds such slasher sales around holidays and other specific days — last November, it held a Black Friday sale that brought down the cost of its annual GoWild! all-you-can-fly pass to $499 from $1,999.
