Nothing could possibly kill the vibe at a Memorial Day BBQ faster than a severed finger.

But it turns out one best-selling cooler model can bite back.

Now, just as the outdoor season heats up, an iconic American manufacturer has expanded an urgent recall on one of the company’s most popular rolling coolers.

Product recalls aren’t uncommon, but during the last month, there have been recalls on several everyday products that are especially hazardous.

There’s a hairdryer that can cause injury or death from electrocution due to a missing protection device; a baby carrier that can accidentally fold up and fall over with a child inside and a pressure cooker with a lid that won’t actually lock under pressure. And that’s just for starters

If you’ve never owned a product subject to a recall, there’s no need to worry too much, because there’s generally a pretty simple fix. (By the way, filling out that little registration card that comes with most consumer products is the best way to guarantee you’ll get notified about recalls.)

Igloo expands recall of a popular cooler model

In February, Igloo recalled more than 1.2 million Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers sold in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico after receiving a dozen serious injury reports.

Since then, more complaints have come in, prompting the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to expand the recall.

The CPSC announced the expanded recall warning after learning the cooler’s telescoping tow handle can pinch users’ fingers, leading to crushing injuries, broken fingers, or amputation.

According to the CPSC, there have now been 78 reports of injuries, including 26 cases involving amputations, fractures, or deep cuts.

“The tow handle can pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, posing fingertip amputation and crushing hazard,” the CPSC said in its updated recall notice.

Igloo, headquartered in Katy, Tex., is now recalling an additional 130,000 Igloo Flip & Tow Coolers.

All of the affected coolers are 90-quart Igloo Flip & Tow models, which feature large rear wheels, a retractable tow handle, and the “IGLOO” brand logo prominently printed on the side.

The rolling coolers were sold at major retailers including Costco, Target, Academy Sports + Outdoors, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Amazon and Walmart also sold them online in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

The products were sold between January 2019 through January 2025; only products produced before January 2024 are subject to the recall.

The coolers were available in various colors and were priced between $80 and $140.

Anyone who owns one of the affected coolers can request a repair kit that will eliminate the hazard. Here’s how:

Check the bottom of your cooler for the manufacture date and model information. Visit www.igloocoolers.com or the CPSC’s recall site to confirm if your model is affected. Contact Igloo to request a free replacement handle. Stop using the cooler until the handle has been replaced.

It might be inconvenient to be without a way to chill those brews at the beach, but the last thing anyone wants is to spend a weekend day in the urgent care.
