Why I love this deal
I’ve tried my fair share of headphones and earbuds, but when it comes to soundbars and Bluetooth speakers, they’re relatively new territory. So when I had the opportunity to test out the iLive 18-Inch 2.0 Channel Portable Soundbar and Bluetooth Speaker (ISB184B), I was excited to see what all the hype was about.
At just $41, the iLive soundbar and speaker seemed like a great entry-level option. With an affordable price tag and rave reviews, it’s a great deal and exactly the type of soundbar and speaker that someone like me, who wasn’t sure if spending a ton on a pricey soundbar just yet, would gravitate toward. From its portability to its ease of use, it’s become a regularly used item in my home. Read on to see why.

A versatile multimedia soundbar and speaker
This two-in-one wireless soundbar also doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, and it’s the multifunctional device I didn’t know I needed. With a 20-watt power output and two full-range speakers, the soundbar is surprisingly loud. The volume can be controlled with the buttons directly on the soundbar or through the device you’ve connected it to. Speaking of connectivity, it has various options to choose from. You can opt for Bluetooth connectivity, which is my go-to and only takes seconds, aux input, a USB port, or a micro SD card.
I usually use the soundbar in smaller areas, like a bedroom or a kitchen, and find the volume to be quite powerful. (It came in handy when I watched Justin Bieber’s Coachella performance on repeat and envisioned I was there in real life.) It’s perfect for my needs; however, the volume might not be loud enough for a big party in a larger area with a lot of people. If you want more volume and power, or to get a surround-sound effect during movie nights, it has True Wireless Stereo (TWS) technology that lets you pair it with a second speaker. At $41 each, two of these soundbars would still cost less than one at a higher price point.

Is the iLive Soundbar and Speaker worth it? Pros and cons
Pros
- Quick Bluetooth connection: It connects to my devices within seconds.
- Easy controls: It’s simple to operate and use.
- Portable: Since it’s wireless, it’s easy to move around and use as a Bluetooth speaker or move from one place to another.
Cons
- Dust magnet: It has a fabric cover that can collect dust, fuzz, and debris if it’s not cleaned regularly. I use a lint roller and give it a light dusting to keep it nice and clean.
- Limited volume in large spaces: It’s great for a small room, but if you need a super loud speaker in a big area, it might not be the best fit.
In addition to powerful sound, you also get a little light show, thanks to its LED lights. You double-click the power button to switch through the lighting modes, from quick flashing to slow flashing to a solid color. I don’t typically use this feature, but I can see it being a great addition to a movie night or a small get-together.
My favorite feature, though, is how portable it is. Without being tied down to wires by a TV, I love to take it from room to room as I clean. And when it’s not in use, it fits perfectly on a shelf under my desk. Measuring 18 inches long by 2.6 inches wide by 2.8 inches high, it’s compact enough to fit on a desk or a TV stand without taking up too much space. It’s also rechargeable, so it doesn’t require extra batteries or pesky wires.
