Falling asleep can be extremely difficult, especially if you’ve had a particularly stressful day. That said, a good night’s sleep is very important for your health, productivity, and overall mental state. While having a good mattress, comfortable bedding, and a cool room can help ensure you sleep well, none of these things are an absolute guarantee. That’s why you shouldn’t simply stop there. There are a number of other techniques you can use to get to sleep and stay there, without counting sheep.

One of the most effective tools humans have in the battle against insomnia is music. Many studies have proven that listening to relaxing music while falling asleep and during REM improve the quality of your rest. However, it’s not always easy to decide the best way to listen to music at bedtime. Playing it on an external speaker may be too loud and distracting for some people. Additionally, you may not have easy access to the speaker if it’s on the other side of the room.

Until recently, headphones of any sort weren’t really an option either. They were too bulky and didn’t allow you to put your head down without being pressed into your ear canal. Thankfully, there are now earbuds designed specifically for those who want to sleep while wearing them. This is an absolute revelation for those of us who prefer to sleep with light music in our ears.

What are sleeping earbuds?

Sleeping earbuds are optimized to allow for the best possible listening and wearing experience. As far as sound goes, most sleeping earbuds deliver high-fidelity dual stereo sound. This comes via reasonably-sized drivers that often prioritize mids and highs over bass, which is optimal for more relaxing soundscapes rather than deep-bass EDM or hip-hop music. Keep in mind, though, that most headphones of any sort will also have an equalizer option that allows you to customize the overall listening experience.

Many sleeping earbuds also employ active noise cancellation (ANC) in order to keep unwanted ambient noise out of your ear canal. This gives an added benefit over basic sound delivery and actually masks outside noise to make sleeping easier. Sleeping earbuds are a true double threat in that regard.

While the audio quality of most sleeping earbuds is a huge selling point, the truly special thing about them involves their ergonomic design. The majority of sleeping earbuds are intended for overnight wear. That means, first and foremost, the part of the headphones closest to your ear canal is optimized for maximum comfort. They usually use flexible soft medical-grade rubber or silicone earpieces rather than hard plastic. This makes it far easier to sleep with them on all night without waking up sore.

The outside of the earbuds are designed with a low-profile silhouette. That allows you to sleep on either side, and the buds won’t press unnecessarily into your ears or the side of your head. This is a problem that sleeping earbuds solved after decades of uncomfortable sleep for music fans. One thing to keep in mind when you buy sleeping earbuds is that they can easily get lost. Because they tend to be smaller than most standard earbuds, you’ll want to keep them in a safe place to avoid losing them.
