Warren Buffett ended his record-breaking charitable pledge this summer, raising questions about what happens to the charities and communities that depend on major donations.
In 2006, the Berkshire Hathaway chairman chose an approach no billionaire had attempted at that scale, pledging the bulk of his fortune to the Gates Foundation.
That commitment, delivered through annual stock transfers, moved more than $47 billion in Berkshire shares over 20 consecutive years and funded programs that vaccinated more than a billion children, according to the foundation’s public statement.
On July 14, 2026, Buffett redirected his full annual stock gift to four family foundations, excluding the Gates Foundation for the first time since the arrangement began, the Associated Press reported.
The decision followed renewed scrutiny of Bill Gates’ past interactions with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which triggered a formal law firm review and ongoing congressional hearings.

How $47 billion in Berkshire stock reached global health programs
From 2006 through 2025, Buffett each year converted a block of Class A Berkshire Hathaway shares into Class B shares and donated them to five foundations, with the Gates Foundation receiving the largest portion, InvestmentNews reported.
The foundation sold those shares over time to fund its operations across global health, education, and poverty reduction.
The Gates Foundation spent more than $100 billion in its first 25 years, with Buffett’s contributions accounting for close to half of that total.
The foundation’s largest single investment went to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which received $7.7 billion and used it to vaccinate more than 1.1 billion children across 78 countries, preventing an estimated 19 million deaths from measles, pneumonia, and diarrhea.
Programs supported by the Global Fund, which the foundation helped establish, have saved 72 million lives and cut the combined death rate from AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria by 65% in countries where the fund invests, the Global Fund’s 2026 Results Report showed.
Amir Pasic, dean of Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, told the Chronicle of Philanthropy that the foundation’s quarter-century investment built a level of global health expertise that smaller organizations would need years to match.
The Gates Foundation has amassed some of the most impressive expertise and knowledge in the areas where they’ve been active. And you can’t just abandon that expertise.
Those shares now have a current market value exceeding $159 billion, though most have been sold by the foundation to finance its programs, Investment News confirmed.
The Epstein investigation fractured a 2-decade Buffett-Gates partnership
Buffett’s decision to cut ties followed a series of revelations about Gates’ past interactions with Epstein, beginning with United States Department of Justice (DOJ) documents released earlier in 2026 that revealed photographs and emails between Epstein and Gates Foundation staff, the AP reported.
The Gates Foundation commissioned Washington law firm WilmerHale in March 2026 to assess its past engagement with Epstein, according to Reuters.
The firm’s report, published July 21, 2026, identified approximately 30 meetings between Epstein and 10 foundation leaders and staff from 2011 to 2014, including visits to Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse and one meeting on the foundation’s campus.

WilmerHale found no evidence that the foundation paid Epstein or that any illegal activity occurred, though its report noted that employees had flagged reputational concerns about those interactions.
Gates, who chairs the foundation, has publicly called the meeting a serious lapse in judgment during congressional testimony and has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes, AP reported.

Buffett redirects $6 billion and names his children as stewards
Buffett donated approximately $6 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock on July 14, 2026, routing the gift to four family-linked organizations, AP showed.
How Buffett’s 2026 donations were allocated
- The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation received roughly $4.5 billion in stock for reproductive health programs, AP reported.
- The Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and Novo Foundation each received approximately $500 million, directed toward Nebraska nonprofits, global hunger, and social justice initiatives, respectively, AP confirmed.
- Buffett’s total giving to these four foundations now exceeds $23 billion since 2006, Fox Business reported.
The Berkshire Hathaway chairman told CNBC he found Gates’ Epstein associations “distasteful” but framed the broader pivot as a question of family readiness, stating: “I tell the three children that it is theirs, and it’s their responsibility to get it done well.”
These foundations operate at a fraction of the Gates Foundation’s scale, with a combined 102 employees and $1.4 billion in grants distributed in 2025, compared to the Gates Foundation’s 2,200-person staff and $8.5 billion annual distribution, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported.
How this philanthropic break changes donor accountability for everyone
Buffett’s exit does more than end a single partnership, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s analysis, which framed the break as a precedent that could reshape how donors, boards, and the public evaluate institutional oversight in large-scale philanthropy.
Following WilmerHale’s review, the Gates Foundation board approved a centralized vetting process for brokers, donor advisors, and funding facilitators, with added scrutiny for meetings proposed at private residences, Reuters reported.
The Gates Foundation says operations remain fully funded through 2045, and the foundation’s CEO, Mark Suzman, has committed to annual spending of at least $9 billion on global health and development.
