Despite what some people might say, TV is far from dead. It has just changed. Streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix have changed the face of at-home entertainment forever, and there’s likely no going back. While television started as an aerial signal over the public airwaves, it shifted in the late 20th century to cable and satellite dominance. In the past decade, however, streaming has become the new foundation for television, and brands like Amazon, Roku, and Google are getting in on the action.
While there are multiple ways to access streaming services on your television, not everyone has the same preferences. Some people access them directly from their smart TV, but that doesn’t always give you the personalized experience you’re looking for. However, if you shop for a specific streaming device, then you can be sure to get exactly what you want.
These devices plug directly into your TV, and they allow you to download almost any streaming service in the world for immediate viewing. Because these devices are essentially plug-and-play, all you need to do is make sure you’re subscribed to your chosen streaming services, and you’re ready to watch! Below, we’ve shared what we consider to be three of the best options for streaming, and most are on sale ahead of the highly anticipated Amazon Prime Day for up to 55% off. It’s rare to see deals this steep ahead of the big sales event, so take advantage and beat the rush while you can.
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select
This is one of our favorites because it actually comes from one of the primary streaming companies itself. That means it works seamlessly with Amazon Prime. However, you can choose from literally hundreds of streaming services, and it will work great with them as well. As the name suggests, it’s able to stream in 4K quality. Additionally, the Fire TV Stick includes AI-powered search functionality, and it’s able to be fully integrated with Alexa, making it a part of your complete smart home setup.

Roku Streaming Stick HD
This device has similar specs to the above Amazon model, but the video quality is not full 4K. It has high-definition resolution, which is perfectly acceptable for many viewers. That said, there is also a 4K version available that’s just a little more expensive. It also includes a voice-activated remote, which is extremely convenient for those who don’t want to fumble around with a cumbersome remote every time they want to make a change. As with the Amazon Fire TV Stick, the Roku Streaming Stick can be combined with an Alexa device for voice instructions.

Google TV Streamer 4K
This device has all the benefits of the first two, but it comes from perhaps the most wide-reaching and technologically advanced tech company of all. It streams in full 4K quality, has 32 gigabytes of internal storage, and even includes a voice search option. It can also function as a central hub for your other smart home devices, giving you an incredible amount of control over your home’s various electronics. The Google TV Streamer 4K even has access to over 800 free streaming services, so you can enjoy it without paying a single subscription fee.

More streaming devices
Although the above streaming devices are among our favorites, there are plenty of other options from which to choose. While many of the largest electronics manufacturers make the most popular streaming devices, you can often find good offers on those that come from lesser-known brands. The most important thing to do when choosing a streaming device is to make sure that it is compatible with your specific television model, as well as being compatible with the legal and licensing requirements in your country. Some streaming sticks or hubs may not necessarily allow for streaming programming from every service in a given country.
