For reasons having to do with everything from the high cost of jet fuel to politics, multiple airlines in other parts of the world have made significant cuts to their service into the U.S. this year.

Canadian flag carrier Air Canada just confirmed the cancelation of its only service to Charleston from Toronto in 2027 while Norwegian budget carrier Norse Atlantic Airways cut all but one remaining route to the U.S. over the last year as part of its efforts to redirect its network to destinations seeing stronger tourism demand among Scandinavian and European travelers (Boeing 787 planes that used to fly from JFK to London Gatwick and Rome Fiumicino have been redirected to routes to Bangkok from Oslo and Stockholm).

The latest reporting by Swiss outlet ch-aviation shows that Romanian-Moldovan budget carrier HiSky Europe is the latest to cancel all flights to North America over the high cost of jet fuel.

HiSky Europe cancels flights to New York and Chicago over fuel costs

Beginning service in 2021 with a flight from the Moldovan capital of Chișinău to Egypt, HiSKy Europe started running the first direct commercial flight from Romania to the U.S. in June 2024 on an Airbus A330-200 flying from Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) to JFK.

The carrier was initially supposed to launch a flight to O’Hare International (ORD) in Chicago to run twice a week alongside the four-times-a-week service to New York. While it had not yet started running a flight, HiSky Europe also received regulatory approval to run a flight to Canada.

The flight to Chicago was pushed back without a launch and, according to reports coming out of Romania, the route from Bucharest to New York has been suspended until Nov. 22.

The cancelations are currently being presented as temporary and set to resume during the peak holiday period in December 2026 and January 2027. HiSky Europe has not released a statement explaining the cancelations and could not be immediately reached for a comment by TheStreet.

Prior to the suspension, the frequency of H4101 has been scheduled to increase to three times a week during the peak holiday period. Between Nov. 7 and 22, all H4101 and H4102 (the return flight to Bucharest) have been removed from the airline’s flying schedule.

HiSky Europe launched a flight between Bucharest and New York on an Airbus 330-200 in 2024.

Travelers with booked travel on these routes either during the suspension window or further into the future are advised to keep checking their booking to ensure that the flight is still taking place.

The airline has been contacting those with canceled flights with rebooking and refund options but much uncertainty exits on why it is suspending the flights and whether what is currently being presented as temporary cancelations will be extended further.

The airline is still operating its regular schedule for flights to European destinations such as Dublin, Paris, Brussels, Hamburg and Milan from Bucharest and Chisinau.
