At the time that Disneyland first opened its doors to California residents in 1955, what would grow into the world’s biggest theme park empire had just 35 primary rides and attractions.

Some of the rides, including “Peter Pan’s Flight” and “Mark Twain Riverboat” remain at Disney parks in multiple countries while others were eventually removed or reimagined as more modern versions.

While the removal of any ride always brings dismay to Disney fans with memories of going on it, ride closures are a fairly regular occurrence at the theme parks based on how many people it attracts and the need to launch new experiences with characters from new films. Even more frequently, rides will be shut down for an extended period of time to be renovated or reworked under a different theme.

Toy Story Midway Mania ride to close down indefinitely in April 2026

The latest ride that is now confirmed to be shutting down permanently is “Toy Story Midway Mania!” in Disneyland’s Hollywood Studios park. Launched in 2008 in both Disney World and Disneyland, the ride has guests sit in a spinning car while wearing 3D glasses and playing carnival-style games with “Toy Story” characters like Woody, Hamm and Buzz LIghtyear.

The same ride was also added to the DisneySea park in Tokyo in 2012.

As first reported by several Disney watchdog sites, “Toy Story Midway Mania” is set to close down to guests on April 2026 without a planned reopening date.

While Disneyland has not officially confirmed the shutdown or commented on the reasons behind it, a California permit shows that it will undergo routine refurbishments. Depending on what is being done, similar refurbishments at Disney parks can last just a few weeks or lead to closures for more than a year.

Two Toy Story rides to close down as new movie comes out in June

The closure of “Toy Story Midway Mania” comes, along with the shutdown of “Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters” in the main Disneyland park on April 13, just weeks before the “Toy Story 5” movie hits screens on June 19.

“Toy Story Midway Mania is one of Disney California Adventure’s most consistently popular family attractions,” writes Disney watchdog Inside The Magic. “The interactive shooting gallery format works across a wide age range, the Toy Story theming has broad appeal, and the competitive element between riders keeps people coming back. Losing it for an undefined stretch during spring break season and the lead-up to summer is a real gap in the park’s family-friendly lineup.”

The closure of “Toy Story Midway Mania” also comes a string of other ride shutdowns at Disneyland including “Silly Symphony Swings,” “Grizzly River Run” “Jungle Cruise” and “Roger Rabbit.”

The Monorail train that takes guests between Tomorrowland and Downtown Disney is also set to close down for refurbishments of an unspecified timeframe on March 30, leaving the approximately 340,000 park guests who use it in an average year having to look for other means of transportation and entertainment (compared to the monorail at Disney World, the Disneyland version is significantly shorter and taken by mainly simply for a scenic view of the resort).
