Costco has built its reputation by offering low prices on everything from groceries and household essentials to electronics and furniture.

Part of what makes the warehouse giant so popular is its reliability.

Members know they can typically count on Costco being open when they need to stock up, whether they’re planning a backyard barbecue, buying bulk groceries, or looking for deals on everyday necessities.

In recent years, Costco has actually extended its hours. It added an extra shopping hour on Saturdays and now gives Executive members early store access on a daily basis.

Costco also keeps its closure schedule relatively limited, which helps the warehouse club giant maintain consistent service while ensuring that shoppers have access to discounted goods throughout the year.

Costco will not close on Juneteenth

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. As a result, a lot of companies close for the day, and some retailers may close or at least alter their store hours.

Costco isn’t one of them, though.

Costco makes a point to only close its warehouse locations on just seven major holidays each year.

Those holidays are:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Easter Sunday
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day (July 4)
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Outside of those seven days, Costco warehouses are generally open for business, although some locations may operate with adjusted hours around certain holidays.

Because schedules can vary slightly by location, it’s always best to confirm local warehouse hours before visiting.

Costco takes store closure decisions seriously

Costco isn’t the only retailer to remain open on Juneteenth. Many major retailers will be welcoming customers as well.

The reason is largely practical.

More Retail:

Retailers operate in a highly competitive environment, and closing for every federal holiday could disrupt shopping patterns and reduce sales. Consumers still need access to groceries, prescriptions, household necessities, and other everyday items, regardless of the holiday calendar.

Granted, Costco may have more leeway to close for holidays like Juneteenth than other retailers. Costco has long had a loyal customer base. And it’s not necessarily competing with regular grocers the same way they tend to compete with each other.

Rather, for Costco, staying open on Juneteenth aligns with its broader strategy of maintaining consistent access for members.

Many shoppers depend on the warehouse chain for affordable prices, especially as inflation continues to put pressure on household budgets. Keeping stores open allows members to take advantage of Costco’s discounts and bulk-buying opportunities whenever they need them.

This year, the decision to stay open on Juneteenth is even more important. It’s high school graduation season in some parts of the country. And families may be reliant on Costco for everything from party supplies to giant sheet cakes.

Costco employees may not be thrilled to not get the day off for Juneteenth. But members may be relieved to learn that they can still access the store as usual.
