Mike Waltz was selected by President Trump to serve as the 29th National Security Advisor of the U.S. just as soon as Trump started his second term in office in January 2025. 

As National Security Advisor, Waltz’s responsibilities include advising Trump as well as coordinating national security and foreign policy with various government agencies, including the Department of Defense, State Department, CIA, National Security Agency, and Homeland Security.

What is Mike Waltz’s net worth?

Unlike Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth or National Intelligence Chief Tulsi Gabbard, each of whom holds Cabinet-level positions, Waltz did not need to file a financial disclosure with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics because he was appointed by Trump and his position didn’t require a confirmation by the Senate.

But, a 2024 financial disclosure to the House of Representatives obtained by OpenSecrets, a nonprofit that tracks money in politics, revealed that at the time, Waltz had a net worth of at least around $3 million, based on assets of between $4 million and $9 million, and liabilities of between more than $1 million and almost $2.2 million.

Significant assets included exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, and money market accounts. Waltz also held a mortgage of as much as $1 million and some student loan debt.

As National Security Advisor, Waltz reportedly has an annual salary of around $180,000, which is slightly higher than his previous pay of $174,000 as a member of the House of Representatives.

Who is Mike Waltz?

Michael Waltz was born in Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida on January 31, 1974. He is the son and grandson of military veterans.

Education and military career

Waltz graduated from Stanton High School in Jacksonville in 1992. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Virginia Military Institute in 1996. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army and served until 2000 in the Special Forces as a Green Beret.

Waltz continued on in the Army Reserves as a member of the Florida National Guard, holding the rank of colonel. Throughout his military career, he served on multiple combat tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa, and was awarded four Bronze Stars, including two for Valor, according to the National Defense Industrial Association, a trade group.

During President George W. Bush’s administration, Waltz served as a defense policy director for Secretaries of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates, and then as a counterterrorism advisor for Vice President Dick Cheney, according to NDIA.

Non-military roles & personal life

Before moving into public office, Waltz founded Metis Solutions, a defense and intelligence contracting firm. He reportedly earned up to $25 million from its sale, according to the publication The Intercept. He was also a cofounder and partner in international consulting firm Askari Associates.

Waltz was elected to serve four terms representing District 6 of North Central Florida in the House of Representatives from 2019, but left early in his fourth term to take on the National Security Advisor role. He was the first person from Special Forces elected to Congress.

Waltz is the author of an autobiographical account of his time in service, “Warrior Diplomat: A Green Beret’s Battles from Washington to Afghanistan,” published in 2023. He is married to Julia Nesheiwat, who was the Homeland Security Advisor during Trump’s first presidential term.

Incidents as National Security Advisor

Just a few months into his career as National Security Advisor, Waltz drew criticism for allowing a journalist into a group chat on the Signal phone app about imminent military strikes in Yemen and for using personal Gmail accounts to do government business. 

Despite these incidents, Waltz remains a trusted member of President Trump’s inner circle.
