Elon Musk says Tesla is inching closer to Cybertruck production.
Elon Musk has spent the past year tamping down any over-enthusiasm about the Tesla (TSLA) – Get Free Report Cybertruck rollout, which was originally scheduled for 2021 and is now pushed back until later in 2023.
That’s not stopping the EV magnate from commenting on the Cybertruck on Twitter.
“Yeah, (there are) still many small tweaks to make it better (and the side mirrors are removable by owner), but this is very close to production design,” Musk said in a February 3rd tweet. The comment came in a response to the Drive Tesla Twitter account noting several public Cybertruck sightings in the past week.
Tesla truck enthusiasts are getting excited over the Cybertruck rollout, but Musk isn’t promising shipments anytime soon.
“We do expect production to start, I don’t know, maybe sometime this summer,” Musk said on a January 26 conference call. “But I always like to try to downplay the start of production because the start of production is always very slow. It increases exponentially, but it’s always very slow at first. So I wouldn’t put too much thought into the start of production. It’s kind of when volume production actually happens, and that’s next year.”
Tesla watchers say Musk’s comments signal a limited number of Cybertrucks will be produced by the end of 2023. The trucks will be reportedly manufactured at the company’s Gigafactory Texas near Austin.
Tesla has reportedly logged 1.5 million Cybertruck preorders as of November 2022, according to data from Elektrek. The same report noted customers only had to pay $100 upfront to get in line for the highly-touted EV truck.
Tesla shares are up about 8% on a year-to-date basis.
