A 2 months old blogpost about the sunsetting of one of the more useful libraries out there. What are the odds this has been posted before?
PHP do not have rational numbers, correct answer can not be guaranteed.

“I’m sunsetting a programming library because of its climate impact”
Well that’s a new one. What the fuck
Sounds like it was also quite impactful on this person’s life as well not just the climate
Ahem, this is increasingly common in an industry that also holds anguished debates (and mandates changes) to terminology like master/slave and blacklist/whitelist.
Wokeness infects everything.
Oh man. First you screwed me with Propel, and now this?! What’s next – React Admin?
Just joking. We do still use Propel, although deprecated and have to run Doctrine in parallel (shared db connection). But haven’t used Faker or React Admin.
I did catch some of the drama on GitHub the other day though. I’m glad you took the time to state your case here and I see where you’re coming from. It does make sense to just encourage forks in many cases. After all, that’s almost literally their entire purpose.
Jeez this subreddit is fucking toxic. Time for me to finally bow out from r/php.
Good on Faker’s author to try and do the right thing, even if some disagree with what the right thing is. Having had to retire a few libraries for similar reasons, it’s really hard to find a good person to take over.
Archiving makes total sense. Everything is still available, and nobody is prevented from forking and maintaining the library, the author just refuses to vouch for one, which I completely get.
Faker already already got a new home with new maintainers: FakerPHP / Faker
What a crock of shit. Rather than doing a little due dilligence to make sure a worthy curator is found, you kill the entire project and feel you are doing the PHP world a favour? Thank you for your contributions, but I question your judgement on this decision. I’m taking my ball and going home.
Just use fakerphp/faker, same thing.
Literally every node package.
Me downloading isos I’ll never use…….. 🤷🏻♂️
Most people only use 1 locale, so they only need a fraction of the library size. Yet, because it’s designed as a multilingual library, there is no alternative:
Yes, discourage accessibility to minorities… great move.
The point the author tried to make is that it’s better to make 1 small base library, and then 1 library for each locale.
With great power comes responsibility. I guess the author could not handle the responsibility and pulled the plug. It’s like batman saying hey I’m fed up with this thankless society and I don’t care anymore.
It’s okie. The author deserves a rest. Meanwhile someone else will stand up and take over the task. The author should not later come back to whine about that, however. He dropped the ball and now is out of the scene.
