Tom Hanks isn’t just an actor; he’s an acting legend, considered among Hollywood’s all-time greats alongside Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant.
Hanks isn’t just one of the greatest actors of his generation; he’s also one of the most successful movie stars in history, with his films collectively grossing more than $11 billion.
The two-time Academy Award winner earned back-to-back Oscars for Philadelphia (1994) and Forrest Gump (1995), starred in blockbuster hits like Toy Story (1995), Apollo 13 (1995), and Saving Private Ryan (1998), and then expanded his repertoire to create his own production company, Playtone, in 1998 with Gary Goetzman. It went on to produce the acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers and blockbuster films, including My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) and Mamma Mia (2008).
In 2022, Playtone inked an exclusive deal with Apple TV that would allow it to develop and produce series, documentaries, and unscripted projects “backed by Apple’s premier content budgets.”
Naturally, all of these projects have helped Hanks build an extraordinary fortune.
Yet despite all his success, Hanks has maintained a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most approachable stars: stopping to take photos with fans while jogging through Central Park, cracking jokes on the red carpet, and raising awareness for causes dear to his heart, such as veterans rights, HIV/AIDS research, and the environment — thus cementing his reputation as “America’s Dad.”
At age 69, you’d think he’d be slowing down, but in 2023, Hanks told Variety he had “no desire” to retire, adding, “There’s only two reasons to go to work: It’ll be good, or it’ll be fun. And if it’s neither one of those, I’ll stay home until the cows come on.”
Hanks has stayed true to his word, and in June 2026, his latest project, Toy Story 5, launched in theaters. In the film, Hanks reprises his role as Woody, the cowboy sheriff and leader of the beloved franchise, as the toys face an unwelcome new dilemma: digital technology.

During the filming of Forrest Gump (1994), for instance, the movie went over budget. So, Hanks agreed to forgo what would have been a $7 million salary in return for a cut of the box office profits, known as a “first dollar” deal.
It turned out to be a wise move, minting Hanks at least $70 million, his largest known payday.
Today, Hanks commands at least $25 million up front for a role.

Tom Hanks’ early life and acting career
Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California, right outside of San Francisco. His father, Amos “Bud” Hanks, was a cook, while his mother, Janet Fraga, was a hospital worker. Hanks has three siblings: an older sister, Sandra, an older brother, Larry, and a younger brother, Jim. Coincidentally, because Jim sounds so much like Hanks, Disney hired him as a voiceover double for Hanks’ video games and merchandise — and Jim has been doing that for the past 30 years.
When Hanks was 5, his parents divorced. He, Sandra, and Larry moved in with his father. Hanks told People he spent a lot of time on Greyhound buses making the 5-hour journey to and from each parent, feeling isolated and daydreaming, which inspired his storytelling. “The natural preponderance I had to sit there quietly and imagine what was going on,” Hanks said, “That fueled me into realizing that there’s actually … a pursuit that is, ‘Let’s put on a show. Let’s tell the story.’ That came along, and bang, that was it.”
Hanks was a loner at Skyline High in Oakland, although he was cast in the school play, South Pacific. He attended Chabot College, a community college, to study theater, later transferring to California State University, Sacramento, but he dropped out to take an internship at the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, Ohio. What was supposed to be a three-month gig turned into a three-year stay and effectively launched his acting career.
In 1979, after winning the Best Actor award from the Cleveland Critics Circle for his portrayal of Proteus in The Two Gentlemen of Verona (one of the few times he has played a villain), Hanks moved to New York City. He appeared in several off-Broadway productions, but it was his television roles that would gain him notice.

In 1983, Hanks was cast as Kip Wilson in ABC’s Bosom Buddies, a sitcom about two advertising workers who pose as women to live in an all-female apartment building.
“The first day I saw him on the set,” the show’s producer, Ian Praiser, told Rolling Stone, “I thought, ‘Too bad he won’t be in television for long.’ I knew he’d be a movie star in two years.”
Hanks’ big breakthrough came the following year, when he was cast as a man who falls in love with a mermaid in Splash (1984), a hit film by Ron Howard.
Tom Hanks’ personal life
Hanks married actress Susan Dillingham (also known by her stage name, Samantha Lewes) in 1978. They had met in college and had two children together, E.A. and Colin, although the couple separated in 1985. Their divorce was finalized in 1987, and Dillingham died from bone cancer in 2002.
In E.A.’s memoir, The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road, she reveals she was physically and emotionally abused by her mother, which led to Hanks receiving primary custody.

In 1986, Hanks met Rita Wilson, who would become his second wife. They have been married since 1988 and share two sons, Chet and Truman.
Tom Hanks’ real estate portfolio
