It’s easy to see the appeal of working from home. At the start of your day, you don’t have to drive to the office, which means your free time isn’t wasted with a long commute. This extra thirty minutes or so can be used to cook breakfast, get in some exercise, or even do chores around the house. Since you don’t need to transport yourself anywhere, you’re also saving money on the constantly increasing fuel costs. Plus, there are many other perks that come along with working in the comfort of your own home, like wearing sweatpants instead of business-casual slacks, or microwaving leftover fish for lunch without concern.
Remote work has been on the rise since the COVID-19 pandemic, but as of 2026, nearly a quarter of workers in the United States work from home. The number of remote workers is predicted to rise to 92 million in the coming years, which includes a combination of fully remote and hybrid positions. As someone who has been working at home for several years now, there’s one item I’ve found that makes all the difference in the success of my workday, and that’s a desk.
Desks are a must-have for remote workers
Sitting in the living room and lounging on the couch is an option when working from home, but creating a defined workspace with an office desk has many advantages. First and foremost, it’s much better for your posture to sit at a desk when working online. A desk aligns your eyes with the computer screen, keeping you from slumping over and putting unnecessary pressure on your shoulders and neck.
The main reason I like a dedicated workspace is that it helps me lock in and focus during work hours. Forming a routine is what leads to successful habits, and my body knows that when I’m sitting at my desk, I’m in work mode, ready to research and write. I’m less distracted by little things, like the refrigerator making ice or my dog grumbling about a delivery person when I’m at my desk. Then, at the end of the day, I can close my laptop, leave this space, and begin to unwind because I’m no longer “at work.”
You don’t need a home office for a dedicated workspace — you just need enough room for a desk, whether that’s in your living room, bedroom, or den. If you have space for a desk, but not the budget, I’m here to tell you: Desks are much more affordable than you’d guess. If affordability is your main concern, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything cheaper than the Furinno Simplistic 31-Inch Black Computer Desk, which is on sale for just $18 at Walmart. It’s compact and no-frills, but it will get the job done for less than a tank of gas.

Office desks under $50 at Walmart
For an affordable desk that won’t break the bank, I suggest checking out Walmart first. The retailer has numerous desks priced at $50 or less, and there are even styles that cater to a variety of needs.
Do you want a standing desk to place a treadmill underneath so you can get your steps in each day? These will be harder to find in this lower price range, but the Edx Wheeled Standing Desk is one option that fits the bill. Storage is also handy at your work desk, and the Beautypeak 48-Inch Computer Desk has four shelves and two drawers to hide away messy clutter, like a laptop charger, pens, and notebooks, for under $50. Find these selections and more from Walmart below.
