For over a century, skyscrapers have served as the ultimate symbols of corporate power and ambition, showcasing the latest in technological and engineering advancements while reaching ever higher toward the sky.

Perhaps no other building better displays where a business has been — and where it’s headed — than JPMorgan Chase’s (JPM) new headquarters, the supertall skyscraper at 270 Park Avenue.

A symphony of enduring materials such as recycled steel, glass, bronze, and copper, the building is notable as the largest “all-electric” skyscraper in New York, powered by 100% renewable energy.

It’s also one of the tallest buildings in the world, standing at 1,388 feet, or 60 stories high, which bestows it not just with skyscraper status but also inclusion in an elite group of “supertall” buildings that includes Hudson Yards and the Willis Tower in Chicago.

Where is JPMorgan Chase’s headquarters?

JPMorgan Chase has been in New York City since 1799. Back then, it was known as the Manhattan Company, and its mission was to provide clean water to the city during an outbreak of yellow fever. However, businessman Aaron Burr (who later became Thomas Jefferson’s vice president) added a provision to the company’s charter that allowed it to use its surplus capital for banking, and thus a financial empire was born.

Today, JPMorgan Chase is the world’s largest bank by market cap, currently around $810 billion as of May 2026, and its new headquarters is located at the same address as its previous one — 270 Park Avenue. The company has called this location home since 1980; its former headquarters, the 52-story Union Carbide building, was demolished in 2019 to make way for the new structure.

Earlier still, between 1914 and 1980, JPMorgan Chase’s headquarters was located in the heart of the Financial District at 53 Wall Street. Housed in a distinctive neoclassical building at the corner of Wall and Broad Streets, The New York Post once called it a “temple to commerce.” That building is also known as the “House of Morgan.”

What are some unique features of JPMorgan Chase’s headquarters?

Technology takes center stage at JPMorgan Chase’s new headquarters, fueled by the company’s aggressive adoption of artificial intelligence — something CEO Jamie Dimon believes will impact “virtually every function” of its business.

270 Park Avenue “reimagines the workplace” for JPM’s employees because its digital footprint is as important as its physical infrastructure, with thousands of connected sensors and smart systems that make operations and collaboration both optimized and efficient.

For instance, workers can use a dedicated mobile app to navigate the building, book meeting rooms, and even order meals and coffee. HVAC systems deliver double the amount of fresh air, while advanced windows let in 30% more daylight, along with “circadian lighting” designed for wellness. Each floor is about twice the average height, making the 60-story tower more comparable in size to a 100-story building.

Security is, understandably, top of mind for a bank that manages $4.3 trillion in assets. And so, to gain access to the building, workers use biometric authentication, including palm and contactless retina scanning.

Dimon has called the 2.5-million-square-foot tower a “beautiful physical manifestation” of the company, while The Wall Street Journal dubbed it “a monument to work,” since it was built during Dimon’s 5-day-a-week return to office (RTO) mandate.

Who designed JPM’s headquarters?

Foster + Partners served as the building’s architect — it also designed Apple Park in Cupertino, California.

Led by Norman Foster, this project drew inspiration from the grid system that defines New York City as well as “the grandeur of the traditional banking hall.”

The tower’s eight floors are organized around a two-story atrium. There are multiple trading floors for the firm’s investment banking operations, along with boardrooms, collaborative work areas, executive offices, fitness centers, meditation rooms, and even a food hall designed by famed NYC restaurateur Danny Meyer.

Foster himself created the memorable art installation in the building’s lobby: an American flag that seems to perpetually wave from an “unseen breeze.”

Dow company histories:

270 Park Avenue cost a whopping $3 billion to construct, a sum Dimon justified by calling their new home “a headquarters for 50 years.”

Ten thousand JPM employees currently work at 270 Park Avenue, representing some of the firm’s most important functions, including its investment banking, markets and trading, technology, and wealth management divisions, as well as its executive leadership team.

The project also added 8,000 new construction jobs and generated $2.6 billion worth of economic activity for New York City, according to JPM statements.

Can I tour JPMorgan Chase’s headquarters?

As the global headquarters of a private company, 270 Park Avenue is not open to the public.

However, due to its location just north of Grand Central Station, it is uniquely situated on top of the city’s underground rail lines, spurring some very creative design decisions. For example, the building is actually suspended 80 feet off the ground by a fan-shaped network of steel columns and bracing, which affords it twice as much outdoor public space as its previous building.

This is something JPM’s designers took full advantage of when planning its street-level plaza, which is open and accessible to the public.

This space includes a garden and five large-scale installations by world-renowned artists, including Maya Lin, Leo Villareal, and Gerhard Richter.
