This turned out to be a harder issue than I thought. Usually, assemblies are loaded Just In Time, the first time they’re used. And this makes really tricky to search for a type during the startup.
AppDomain.CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies();
This will return only the already loaded assemblies.
Assembly.GetEntryAssembly().GetReferencedAssemblies();
This approach might help, but it returns only direct references and not the transitive ones. So if you’re referencing A library, which has a reference to B, you won’t get the B.
Loading assemblies from the output “bin” folders
Probably the only way. But it seems too much a hard-coded approach. If someone has some complex build procedures, this might fail.

Enumerate the directory under BaseDir and Assembly.Load dlls. That’s basically the approach.
Actually, this is option 3 in my post, right? Yes, it seems like the only option.
My problem with this approach is what if folks not using msbuild, and they tweaked the build process (e.g. the output is completely somewhere out of the BaseDir).

Oh, actually BaseDir gets you the runtime location, so it doesn’t matter. Great.
I did this once. First call Assembly.GetEntryAssembly(), then put that assembly in a queue. Also make an empty set called knownAssemblies. Then go through the queue repeatedly until it is empty; each time you encounter an assembly in the queue, remove it from the queue, and if it’s not already in knownAssemblies, add it to knownAssemblies, and call GetReferencedAssemblies() on it. Put all those assemblies in the queue. Each iteration of the queue will go one level deeper in the references, and the set of known assemblies will make sure you don’t get stuck in an infinite loop. Yep, searching recursively might be a good approach. But, you may end up going recursively through all nuget packages, something you might no be interested in. Anyhow, one of the most appealing approaches! Thanks.

What exactly are you trying to do? In general most of the assemblies you’ll find by trying to recursively get them all won’t be of interest. For example, I bet you aren’t looking for types that will appear in, say, mscorlib.dll.
I’d be willing to bet you’re looking for something that might have an easier way to find it.
Yes, you’re totally right. That’s something I have in mind and have to tackle afterward since that issue is present in all of the above approaches. Probably the way to handle that is either to exclude some known publishers (e.g. everything that starts with Microsoft”), or include only assemblies that contain some keyword (e.g. if all the projects of interest start with some known root name). Anyhow, that’s the next step to think of 🙂
