TL;DR
  • Google plans to turn off AI tools in its software for K-12 students next year, unless school administrators explicitly turn them on.
  • At the same time, schools that restrict access to these AI tools will also lose access to Google Search.
  • If a school has banned AI, students will see a message from their school stating that Search is unavailable.

From Help me write to quiz generation, Google has packed its products full of AI tools that could help students along their academic journey. At the same time, these tools can easily be used as shortcuts, preventing students from truly learning from their lessons. Even Google understands why there’s skepticism around the use of AI in education. As such, the company is turning off access to these tools in its software for K-12 students, but it will come at a cost.

While announcing Guided Learning integration in Google Search and Google Classroom, the tech giant revealed that it is updating its approach to controls for its AI products. Early next year, access to tools like Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and more will be disabled for K-12 student accounts. School administrators will need to explicitly turn these tools on for students to have access.
