With the cost of jet fuel continuing to sit at years-long highs over a lack of ceasefire on the war of Iran, almost every airline in the world is trimming its network to cut any routes not bringing in the necessary traffic.

Particularly for smaller airlines, flying a route half-full can result in unsustainable losses. The latest carrier to axe a flight that it has been running for 12 years and leave a regional city without any air service is Scottish regional airline Loganair.

Launched out of Glasgow Airport (GLA) in 1962 as the air charter branch of a local construction company, Loganair connects major hubs like Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen to many remote islands in Scotland and England.

Loganair cuts all flights out of Dundee in Scotland by 2027

When British carrier Blue Islands collapsed in bankruptcy in November 2025, Loganair launched several rescue flights from the Channel Island of Guernsey to Exeter, Bristol, and Southampton.

As part of its route-cutting in response to the high cost of jet fuel, Loganair announced that it will be canceling all flights from Dundee Airport (DND) on the eastern coast of Scotland by the end of 2026. This comes after Loganair had previously made a similar move to also exit Southampton Airport (SOU) in southeastern England by 2027.

The major flight connecting the fourth-largest city in Scotland to the rest of the United Kingdom, a route to London Heathrow Airport (LHR), currently runs twice a day on an ATR 42-500 plane and will be cut on Oct. 23.

The other routes that will get phased out include routes to Kirkwall and Sumburgh, which had been operated as public service obligation (PSO) routes subsidized by local and federal governments to provide air service to isolated communities. As Loganair is currently the only airline serving Dundee, its exit leaves the city without any commercial air service at all.

In a statement, Loganair said that continuing to run flights out of Dundee is “financially unsustainable.” The cuts puts the future of at least 16 Loganair staff working out of Dundee in question.

“We are not able to identify a viable way forward”: Loganair on Dundee closure

“We have since explored alternative options but have not been able to identify a viable way forward that meets the objectives of the PSO while allowing the route to operate sustainably,” a Loganair spokesperson said in an extended statement in which it added that those who already booked travel past October 2026 will be contacted regarding refunds. “Customers affected by the change will be contacted directly. We are also supporting Dundee-based colleagues and will explore alternative roles across the Loganair network wherever possible.”

The local city council and airport authority said that the decision to exit Dundee 12 years after Loganair first started flying out of it in 2014 came as a “complete shock” given that many locals have relied upon its air service.

“That’s unacceptable for the workforce and Dundee as a whole, particularly as Loganair has received millions of public funds to support public service obligation (PSO) routes,” Dougie Orchardson, a representative of the local union representing Loganair workers out of Dundee, said in his own statement.
